Atkins is a television actor who played the character of Dr. Michael Gallant on NBC Universal Television's medical drama "ER". He joined "ER" in the eighth season in 2001 and left after the 2003-2004 season to star in "Hawaii," another NBC Universal Television series. He continued to appear on "ER" until his character was killed at the end of the 2005-2006 season.

He currently portrays the character Gary Navarro on the CBS science fiction program "The 4400."

He received his bachelor's degree in theater/speech from Northwestern University.
